Education
After high school, Carnwath studied art in Illinois, Greece, and Vermont before attending the California College of Arts and Crafts, where she studied ceramics, painting, and sculpture with Viola Frey, Art Nelson, Jay DeFeo, and Dennis Leon. She received her Master of Fine Arts from California College of Arts and Crafts in 1977.
Career
She is a Professor Emerita of Art from University of California, Berkeley.
